He was emerging from the phone booth in the alcove off the hall when Mrs. Minken accosted him. She lowered her square head, giving him even more of a view of her permed auburn hair foaming over it like beer out of a tankard, to gaze expectantly at him. âIs your wife missing the family, Mr. Reaper?â
âCall me Ted, wonât you? Sheâs hoping she can join us later in the week.â
âThat would be happiest, wouldnât it? What did you say she did?â
âSheâs a carer. Some people wonât be happy till everyone has one.â
âShe ought to be given her break when she booked it, all the same. Canât someone take over for her while she comes away?â
âSome of these cases get to know the person theyâre assigned and wonât have anyone else.â
âThey oughtnât to be let expect so much, should they? Iâll say no more, I see youâre keeping your thoughts in. Is the little soldier missing his mam?â
âIâm doing my best to make sure he doesnât.â
âYou could have a handicap at that and still come out the winner. Heâs a credit to you. A little credit, arenât you? A credit to your dad.â
âMrs. Minken is saying youâre a good boy, Ben.â
âBen.â
âBen, thatâs right. Thatâs your name.â
âIsnât he a treasure. Doesnât say much, but when he does itâs as clear as the news on the telly. I wish all the kiddies weâve had staying were like him. Put you off your Sunday roast, it would, some of the language weâve heard and the mess weâve had to clear up after them. Does he speak up for himself more when heâs in the mood?â
âHeâs learning at his own pace. Iâm teaching him all the time. As you say, we wouldnât want him coming out with things we donât want to hear.â
âI didnât mean a word against him or you either. Is he a bit tired as well? Is that part of why heâs so quiet?â
âI think you could be on to something, Mrs. Minken.â
âAnd I hope you wonât mind me opening my mouth a bit further, but you look as though you could do with some sleep too.â
âIâve been driving quite a way of late. Thatâs my business, long-distance transport. Iâm hoping to catch up on my rest before I have to get going again.â
âWhat must you think Iâm thinking of? Donât let me keep either of you from your beds.â She stooped to tickle the toddler under the chin. âYouâre the image of your father,â she said.
âThank you for reminding me, Mrs. Minken.â As the hotel landlady vanished into the basement kitchen he used the club attached to the room-key to prod the toddler onto the stairs beneath the teardrop chandelier too large for the hall. âUp you scrabble,â he murmured. âNobodyâs making you do anything you donât want to do, are they? Can you hear the television? You can watch mine when weâre in the room.â
On the middle floor the child tramped straight to the room at the front of the building.
